Synthetics have a longer life (don't listen to the parts store guy who tells you they need to go every 3000) than standard conventional oil. They use longer carbon strains which take longer to break down by your engine.
If your vehicle is newer it uses synthetics anyway, if you don't know when it was last changed go ahead and get it done.
